The abbreviation HIV stands for Human Immunodeficiency Virus. As the name suggests, the HIV damages the body’s immune system. If an HIV infection is left untreated, the body will eventually be unable to defend itself against other pathogens and will develop severe forms of otherwise harmless illnesses. This condition is called AIDS (“acquired immune deficiency syndrome”).
Although HIV is incurable, it can now be effectively managed with medication, which prevents the virus from replicating and thus prevents the onset of AIDS. If an HIV infection is detected early enough, it is possible to live a normal life with it today.
Our antigen-antibody test checks whether certain antibodies directed against the HIV virus or the virus itself (antigen) are present in the blood.
The body usually doesn’t produce antibodies against the HIV virus until about three months after infection. You should keep these twelve weeks between transmission and a definitive diagnosis in mind when interpreting the test results. Experts also refer to this period as the “window period” (diagnostic window). This window period is significantly shorter with laboratory tests. However, you can only have the latter performed by a doctor.
