This test is used to detect Chlamydia trachomatis, one of the three known species in the Chlamydia family of bacteria.
Chlamydia trachomatis infections are the most common sexually transmitted infections. In Germany alone, the number of new infections is estimated at 300,000 to 500,000 per year. Young adults (ages 15–25), people with multiple sexual partners, and newborns of infected mothers are most commonly affected. Infections without sexual contact (e.g., in swimming pools) are rare but cannot be ruled out. Chlamydia trachomatis infections often cause no symptoms but can lead to conditions such as eye infections, arthritis, and urinary tract infections. Furthermore, untreated infections often cause infertility and increase the risk of ectopic pregnancies and premature births. In developing countries, Chlamydia trachomatis infections are the most common cause of blindness in newborns.
Treatment of chlamydial infections during pregnancy is particularly important. Approximately 60%–70% of infected mothers transmit the infection to their newborns. Common complications in newborns include conjunctivitis and pneumonia.
