A urinary tract infection is an inflammation of the urinary tract, usually caused by bacteria, particularly intestinal bacteria. The urinary tract includes the urethra, bladder, ureters, and renal pelvis.
People with a vagina are particularly prone to urinary tract infections, as the short urethra facilitates the entry of germs. About 11 percent of them develop a urinary tract infection each year. However, older adults are also affected, as an enlarged prostate can interfere with urine flow. In healthy individuals, urine is sterile (contains no microorganisms). One of the most important measures for maintaining the sterility of the urinary tract is to empty the bladder regularly and completely. Typically, an infection begins in the urethra and can then spread to the upper urinary tract, all the way to the kidneys.
Symptoms vary widely and depend on whether the lower urinary tract or (also) the upper urinary tract is affected. In infections of the lower urinary tract, a person may experience a burning sensation when urinating or a strong urge to urinate. In addition, the urine may be cloudy or have a strong odor. If the bladder is also affected, this is referred to as cystitis (a mild but unpleasant bladder infection). Infections of the upper urinary tract can cause similar symptoms, but may also be accompanied by lower back pain, fever, and chills—a condition that may well require hospitalization.
