This volume brings together texts and artworks by intersex people from different regions of the world, complemented by selected solidarity texts. Thirteen authors provide insights into their experiences in more than ten different countries (Argentina, Australia, Costa Rica, Germany, Sweden, Serbia, South Africa, Taiwan and Turkey, with some of the authors also contributing their life experiences from other countries). The book also features paintings and photos by three inter* artists, also from different countries. As editors, we have tried to provide further information in the form of an introduction, a glossary and a resource section, which are helpful for understanding the current social and political situation in Germany and for further engagement with the topic.
Most of the contributions focus on personal experiences, many also on the activism with which the authors fight for their rights and social recognition. Legal issues and the role of medicine are also addressed. The book was written against the background that intersex people are still exposed to multiple human rights violations, violence and discrimination almost everywhere in the world. The texts and pictures also report on these traumatic experiences and their consequences. However, they are primarily characterised by their courage and strength and by the positive attitude with which the authors and artists go their way and fight their battles.
